QuickBooks Online + Intuit Assist: AI built into the ledger your clients already run

Our verdict: Most small US businesses keep their books in QuickBooks Online, so this is the AI most of your clients already own. Intuit Assist is Intuit's AI, and it comes with every paid QBO plan at no extra line item. It helps code transactions, match bank-feed items, and pull reports together on the client's own books. That is real time saved on write-up work -- the manual coding and cleanup you do to get a client's books ready. Just know the edge of it: this is client-ledger AI, not a system for running your firm. It won't manage your workflow, chase client documents, or research a tax question. Plans run $38 to $275 a month by tier, with the AI included at every level.

QuickBooks Online is a cloud accounting ledger with Intuit Assist AI built in to categorize transactions, help reconcile bank feeds, and draft reports; plans run $38 to $275 a month with the AI included.

What does QuickBooks Online + Intuit Assist actually deliver?

It puts AI on the bookkeeping tasks that eat the most hours. As bank and card transactions come in, Intuit Assist suggests a category and a match, so coding becomes a quick review instead of typing every line. It helps clear the reconciliation by flagging the items that don't line up between the books and the bank statement. Ask it a question about the books and it answers in plain words. Ask for a report and it builds a first version you tidy up.

Keep one thing in front of you. The AI works on one client's ledger at a time, inside that client's QuickBooks. It speeds up the write-up and the close for that single business. It does not sit above your practice and route work, and it will not answer a tax question against the tax code. Treat it as a faster ledger, not a firm platform.

What does it cost?

QuickBooks Online publishes four plans, priced per company file per month. Intuit Assist, the built-in AI, comes with all of them at no extra charge.

PlanPriceWhat you get
Simple Start$38/moOne user; income and expense tracking; Intuit Assist included
Essentials$75/moAdds bill management; up to three users; Intuit Assist included
Plus$115/moAdds project and inventory tracking; up to five users; Intuit Assist included
Advanced$275/moMore users; deeper reporting and automation; Intuit Assist included

The AI is part of the plan price, so there is no separate AI charge to budget. Intuit runs frequent discounts for new customers, so the first few months may cost less than the sticker price; the numbers above are the standard published rates. Pricing checked 2026-07-24. Keeping client data safe

Confidentiality note: Client books, bank data, and any tax-return information are covered by rules you answer for, not the vendor. Under IRS Circular 230 you stay responsible for the work you sign, even when AI helped produce it. IRC section 7216 -- a federal rule that requires a tax preparer to get the client's written consent before using or sharing tax-return information -- can apply the moment return data goes into a third-party tool. The FTC Safeguards Rule (part of the GLBA financial-privacy law) and the IRS-required WISP, a Written Information Security Plan every firm must keep, mean you have to check how a tool stores and protects data. Before any client ledger, return, or personal information goes into QuickBooks AI features, get Intuit's data-handling and model-training terms in writing and confirm they do not train on your client data. A local pro from the finder below can help review those terms. This site is educational only -- it is not tax, accounting, or legal advice.

Who is it right for?

Strong if…

  • Your clients already keep their books in QuickBooks Online.
  • Manual transaction coding and monthly reconciliations are where your hours go.
  • You want less write-up busywork without adding a new vendor or migrating data.
  • You are comfortable reviewing AI suggestions before they hit the books.

Maybe not if…

  • You need to run your firm's workflow, deadlines, and client requests -- that is Karbon, TaxDome, or Canopy.
  • You want bookkeeping automated across a whole book of clients -- look at Botkeeper or Double.
  • You need tax research with citations -- that is Blue J.
  • Your clients run Xero or another ledger; Intuit Assist only works inside QuickBooks.

Common questions

How much does QuickBooks Online cost, and is Intuit Assist extra?

QuickBooks Online has four published plans: Simple Start $38/mo, Essentials $75/mo, Plus $115/mo, and Advanced $275/mo. Intuit Assist, Intuit's built-in AI, comes with every paid plan at no separate charge. You pay for the QBO tier and the AI is part of it. Pricing checked 2026-07-24.

What does Intuit Assist actually do?

It works on the client's own books inside QuickBooks. It suggests categories for transactions, helps match and reconcile bank-feed items, answers questions in a chat-style helper, and drafts reports and summaries from the ledger. A person still reviews and approves the results.

Is QuickBooks a practice-management tool for my firm?

No. QuickBooks Online is the accounting ledger for a business's books, not a system for running your firm's own workflow, tax research, or client document requests. For those jobs look at Karbon, Canopy, or TaxDome.

What about client consent and IRC section 7216?

Section 7216 is a federal rule that says a tax preparer must get the client's written consent before using or sharing tax-return information. Before any client return data or personal information goes into an AI feature, get Intuit's data-handling terms in writing, confirm the tool does not train on your client data, and handle 7216 consent where return information is involved.
